NY Times. 12/27/09 Hard Choice for a Comfortable Death: Sedation, A Hartocollis

This, Comfortable Death Sedation nonsense, is the type of warped reasoning by this administration that has stirred the emotions and anger of most Americans not being represented in this healthcare reform legislation. This is an attempt by the Harry Reids of this world to make this procedure look harmless and compassionate to families; I am not buying it. If we are going to make decisions based strictly on financial principles and the work of bureaucrats, then the government's termination should be close at hand due to its unbridled spending and borrowing. Also, if these bills seek to mandate lifestyle requirements in addition to obesity, sugar, and exercise regulation, the government has hopefully included tobacco use as a prohibition. Thus Obama himself, a smoker, has a problem continuing executive service without quitting his habit.

America until now has offered to its citizens, the finest healthcare system in the world. Yet, that achievement is apparently too expensive an item for the administration to tolerate it being included in the federal budget. One must wonder aloud about their need for cost reduction by seeking answers to the following questions:

Can't we live with five less B-2's?
What about less junkets with congressman, staffs, and even Presidential entourages including, air force one and its carbon use?
Can we tolerate less foreign aid, U.N. support and subsidies for governments that hate us?
What about abortion funding?
What about federal spending and borrowing?

I am merely trying to utilize hyperbole to let government officials know that a decision about an elder American's death must be left to that person and their family alone, through their instruction or medical directive. My parents like those of Congressional members were allowed to make that life and death choice and we as siblings benefited, as did the nation, from retaining some of them in our lives much longer.

As an example, people like former New York Mayor Ed Koch who has undergone expensive surgery in recent months seems to be doing well. I am glad America still has the former Mayor's experience and advice available to us all. I know that many in this administration simply do not care what Americans are thinking, but those are my thoughts concerning end of life issues.

This administration is simply not in touch with a majority of Americans. Bureaucratic actions predict many current unethical politicians' future removal from public office. Their historical legacy will be the squandering of American freedoms and liberties, including the right of the individual to make life and death choices.

I recently read a cutesy article entitled Oh, come, Oh come, Emanuel. As a Christian, my curiosity was peaked to favor this noted author by reading his expansive missive. Imagine my shock when I realized he was referring to the President's chief of staff, not Christ. I have news for that author, there is a huge difference between purity and rudeness, the immortal and the mortal, the divine and the ordinary.

I remain steadfastly opposed to one of the most liberal and nonsensical agendas ever mandated to the American people by a national administration. If the day comes when I can make a difference in the lives of Americans by eliminating this legislation, I will do so! I will join those working class Americans, who have protested this nonsense, while trying to make ends meet, many having lost their jobs.

I simply will not have corrupt bureaucrats deciding who lives or dies. In the words of Winston Churchill, I will oppose them, If necessary alone!

LA Times, LA Opinion, Post under article on Liberman, 12.21

MOTHER TERESA, HARRY REID AND ROD BLAGOJEVICH,

This is a most unlikely trio, a bit of hyperbole, but definitely germane to this pathetic moment in American history.

Mother Teresa was a giver, to the less fortunate, the unrepresented among the world's poorest people. She gave without expecting anything in return. Unselfish to the point of not residing in the finest hotels or buildings while doing her noble work. She was a doulos, in the Greek language that means servant. she was not a deal maker, only an advocate who gave her life in service for the poorest among us, she will forever be fondly remembered.

Rod Blagojevich, an Illinois Governor, discredited for making deals to supposedly help his family and friends. In fact he is charged that he used his chance to fill the seat vacated by Barack Obama as one more money making plan--NY Times April 2, 2009. It seems his primary purpose was to execute and preserve power...for the financial and political benefit of his close friends. Definitely a deal maker often seeking to exchange his assets for others resources. Yet, in comparison to Harry Reid's exchanges and deals, a small player. Probably pending legal matters against him should be dismissed, unless charges are forthcoming against Mr. Reid and the administration for corrupt deal making.

Harry Reid, the Senate Democratic leader, supposedly a religious man, was shown in this Senate healthcare matter--to be only a deal maker. For example in the article by David Espo, AP Senate correspondent appearing in Breitbart December 21st entitled, Health care Clears Senate Test, one has only to read the quote on Senator Ben Nelson, "Senator Ben Nelson's announcement Saturday that he had decided to support the bill-in exchange for a variety of concessions". Whether Louisiana's receipt in the bill of a coming 300,000,000 concession or other Democratic perks and exchanges, Harry Reid is one of the greatest secretive dealmakers of all time. He has betrayed the trust of his nation, and the expressed disapproval of this bill by a majority of Americans, He made a simple decision for his self interest, to do the administration's bidding. He and his colleagues have failed the nation by not representing the people. We must look, in future elections, to new candidates who are committed to being servants of the people, rather than corrupt deal makers. Those, like Reid who can't distinguish between genuine compromise desired by the people and back room deal making, should not be re elected.

John Kennedy, writing Profiles in Courage, highlighted those Senators and historical figures who had made a difference, by representing Americans first and themselves last. Mother Teresa will be remembered fondly by the world's citizens, even Rod Blagojevich might be forgiven and granted some slack, but Harry Reid, will be remembered in American history as a corrupt deal maker who failed to represent a majority of the American People. He is a failure in principle, ethics, integrity and the basic principle of right and wrong.

The Washington Post, 12/19/09 Deal on health bill reached, S. Murray, L. Montgomery

The health reform bill is now owned by the administration and congressional democrats. It's provisions and the subsequent national analysis will occupy debate and produce controversey for months to come. This bill's efficacy, function and control of one sixth's of the nation's economy is not the true issue. The real issue is the subject that has been effectively shoved from the American political stage, the jobs debacle. Seventeen million unemployed or underemployed workers, the loss of their income-expertise, hope, vision, and individual loss of self esteem . An administration unwilling to confront this disaster in a direct or substantial way, will now be able to focus on other issues. This makes the Katrina oversight and incompetence look like a minor matter.

For example, currently, between the state of Iowa's tax levy and that of the federal rate, businesses must pay 41.6 percent to government. This type of excessive business taxation has given the U.S. the dubious distinction of being the world's leader in corporate taxes. This "jobs killer" must be dealt with to improve the competitiveness of America. This provides no incentive at all for corporations to retain or create jobs in this country.

Ireland's overall rate on companies is 12.5 percent, Singapore has just introduced a program for start up businesses with the first three years almost tax free, China at 25 percent features special districts minimizing rates even further.

We are in an economic trade war for the jobs provided by our companies. With two hands tied behind our back we passively surrender our American workers pay to other countries by failing to provide our companies with freedom from burdensome tax rates. This must be stopped now and American jobs must come first.

Past proposals, from various members of Congress of a five or ten percent cut on federal taxes will not make a difference for companies in this competition for jobs with foreign countries. We need to take action to bring the jobs back for the 18 million jobless or underemployed workers.

Specifically,

I propose corporate round tables to meet with the new President after the 2012 elections on federal and state tax reductions for businesses, and to establish monthly goals for corporate job restoration-creation in the U.S.

In the interim period between now and then, I would strongly encourage the administration to recognize that the President must make job restoration-creation a 24/7 number one priority. Any current administration program which increases borrowing and deficits and is unnecessary should be immediately curtailed, that also includes healthcare non-essentials.

I propose that the Federal government make initial cuts in the corporate tax rate to 10 or 15 percent prior to state's review of their taxes,

I further propose actuarial studies to determine how increased job growth would through the normal payroll tax, prevent deficit growth due to tax reductions at the federal and state levels.

Recently, the tax foundation stated: "The key to improving America's tax competitiveness is a partnership between federal and state law makers to work toward the common goal of lowering the overall business tax burden in the U.S. Otherwise, America. will continue to fall behind in the global tax race simply by standing still."

In summary, the above plan, albeit simple in thrust, will work if the nation has the resolve to put it into action. We simply cannot wait much longer to start down the path to real economic recovery. Hopefully, many meaningful ideas will be considered in the months ahead, unless the recent jobs summit was merely a manufactured photo opportunity or public relations ploy; if that's the case the employment problem will worsen and the nation could plunge into a full fledged depression, especially in view of the recent comments of Zhu Min, a deputy governor of the People's Bank of China that it is getting harder for governments to buy U.S. treasuries.

Recession hitting Ohio's former steel towns hard
WARREN, OHIO 12/17/09 -- All day long the front door buzzes at Uptown Gems & Jewels. The people come in with their trinkets wrapped in tissue or velvet boxes. Response, Dr. Alan Phillips DOES ANYONE REALLY KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS? DOES ANYONE CARE?

We simply must cease creating jobs in China and begin restoring jobs in America, and that includes Ohio. Politicians make the trek every four years to Ohio and promise jobs, yet the jobs are created in China and overseas, not at home. Several factors contribute to this reality including but not limited to; bad trade agreements, politicians placing little real priority on restoring American jobs, the federal government annually extracting 35 percent in taxes from each corporation, states piling on additional state levy's, highly competitive foreign countries in an undeclared jobs war against the U.S., Ireland, China, Singapore and others levying significantly less in taxes on corporations, resulting in the rust belt, America's continued loss of payrolls and jobs.

I propose, a small component, an incentives economic program which focuses on job restoration. In summary the concept is a simple one, lower state and federal taxes on corporations that return jobs from overseas, or create their numerical equivalents in new occupations for the American worker.

As an example, currently, between the state of Iowa's tax and that of the federal rate, businesses must pay 41.6 percent to government. This type of excessive business taxation has given the U.S. the dubious distinction of being the world's leader in corporate taxes. This "jobs killer" must be dealt with immediately to improve the competitiveness of America for job growth. This present tax system simply provides no incentive at all for corporations to retain or create jobs in this country.

Ireland's overall rate on companies is 12.5 percent, Singapore has just introduced a program for start up businesses with the first three years almost tax free, China at 25 percent features special districts minimizing rates even further. In summary, the above plan, albeit simple in thrust, will work if the nation has the resolve to put it into action. We simply cannot wait much longer to start down the path to real economic recovery. Although, I have written and published this concept for months, I have yet to experience any interest from the administration in Washington.

Hopefully, many meaningful ideas will be considered in the weeks ahead, unless the jobs summit is once again merely a manufactured photo op or public relations ploy; if that's the case the employment problem will worsen and the nation could plunge into a full fledged depression.

Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Pennsylvania in fact all of our states need job restoration. As the hit song of the group Chicago so ably asked years ago, Does anyone really know what time it is, does anyone care--about time? America, I may be just a grandfather but I care.

NY Times 12.14.2009 Disaster and Denial, Paul Krugman

Response, Dr. Alan Phillips

Dr. Krugman,

You are right as was Santanyana, those who fail to learn from the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. I posit that the basic problem exemplified in the Republicans and Democrats cited in your article is one of insensitivity due to loss of ethics and grassroots compassion. When one feasts at the table of privilege it is easy to set aside courage and a conviction as to what is right.

All members of Congress, whatever party would do well to review these paraphrased remarks of young John Kennedy, from his Independence Day address in 1946 when he was a candidate for the Massachusetts, 11th Congressional District, he understood what they do not, right verses wrong.

WE STAND TODAY IN THE SHADOW OF HISTORY, IN THE VERY CRADLE OF LIBERTY,

OUR GOVERNMENT WAS FOUNDED ON THE ESSENTIAL RELIGIOUS ELEMENT OF INTEGRITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL,

AND THE IDEALISTIC ELEMENT, A FIXED REGARD FOR PRINCIPLE--THE CONVICTION THAT OUR EYES HAVE SEEN THE GLORY OF THE LORD--THAT RIGHT IS RIGHT AND WRONG IS WRONG-THIS IDEALISM LED TO THE CIVIL WAR, WORLD WAR ONE AND TWO, AND THE UTLIMATE FULFILLMENT OF THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION AND CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION,

REMEBERING,THE PATRIOTIC ELEMENT, LOVE OF COUNTRY AND WHEREVER FREEDOM HAS BEEN IN DANGER, AMERICANS WITH A DEEP SENSE OF PATIOTISM HAVE BEEN WILLING TO STAND AT ARMAGEDDON AND STRIKE A BLOW FOR LIBERTY AND THE LORD,

MINDFUL OF THE INDIVIDUALISTIC ELEMENT-THE RIGHT OF THE INDIVIDUAL AGAINST THE STATE HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF OUR MOST CHERISHED POLITICAL PRINCIPLES, THE AMERICAN CONSTITUTION HAS SET DOWN FOR ALL MEN TO SEE THE ESSENTIALLY CHRISTIAN AND AMERICAN PRINCIPLE THAT THERE ARE CERTAIN RIGHTS HELD BY EVERY MAN WHICH NO GOVERNMENT AND NO MAJORITY, HOWEVER POWERFUL CAN DENY,

CONCEIVED IN GRECIAN THOUGHT, STRENGHTENED BY JUDEO CHRISTIAN MORALITY, AND STAMPED INDELIBLY INTO AMERICAN PHILOSOPHY, IS THE RIGHT OF THE INDIVIDUAL TO DISAGREE WITH THE STATE--THIS IS THE KEYSTONE OF OUR CONSTITUTION,

In summary we need these types of men and women to emerge politically upon the scene once again. Imaging and public relations are not a substitute for a resolute commitment by individuals, who would serve, to the principle of integrity, doing what is right regardless of perks and favors..

In the end, in view of day after day of disaster and denial, Americans need to apply, in electing representatives, along with experience the fundamental attribute which John Kennedy identified in 1946. We need representatives who know the difference between right and wrong and are willing to apply that principle in voting. Then and only then will we both be able to write many new examples of profiles in courage. Thanks Paul for a great article which I hope many in Congress will read and apply to their own lives.
